After much begging from the children, we all sat down for a family movie night double feature – Curse of Chucky, followed by Cult of Chucky.

After the batshit crazy Seed of Chucky, Curse of Chucky is a return to a more traditional type of horror movie. Sure, it’s still a film about a killer doll, but there’s real suspense and moments you’re not quite sure what’s going on. Several tropes are turned on their ear, which made for an entertaining ride. It was driving my kids NUTS – they’re not quite used to interpreting films for themselves yet. I’m working on it.

I was impressed by the way Don Mancini ret-conned additional backstory for Charles Lee Ray. I won’t give it all away, but it was a brilliant play to incorporate Brad Dourif’s real daughter, Fiona, into the Chucky mythology.

My only disappointment was that since I DVRed the film from AMC, I feel like we missed some good gore. The film also suffered from ‘Breakfast Club Syndrome,’ which is when characters repeatedly say, “Forget You!” No one ever says “Forget you!” They just don’t. I think there was also an after credit scene that we missed. Fuck, I love after credits scenes. Regardless, Curse of Chucky was a tight horror movie. Not a bad way to spend a Friday night.
